The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Visiting these two sites is complicated. Even more when you are not staying in New York, but coming from another state and the train trip takes almost 2 hours. First, you better get your tickets soon and through the Internet, otherwise you might end up seeing the Statue from Manhattan. And you better do so in advance, especially if you want to go inside the pedestal or up the statue. Second, once you arrive, be prepared for some airport-like queue and security control. I had my laptop with me and they took me aside after the control to do something with my computer, probably note down some identification code on it. The only thing that's not airport-like is the transportation. The boat trip is pretty quick and, in my opinion, the approach to Liberty Island offers the best views of the Statue of Liberty. In Liberty Island, apart from the statue, one can enjoy the impressive skyline of Manhattan, a sight to remember. Then our trip continues to the far bigger Ellis Island. We take another boat that brings us to the famous federal immigration station where so many people escaping poverty in Europe landed to see their dream of a new opportunity fulfilled or crushed.

There we took a free tour with a quite peculiar guy, a ranger, that tried very very hard to be politically correct. This resulted in a kind of childish speech that convinced neither some very obviously Conservative part of the audience nor the rest of it. His jokes where remarkably cheesy too. We thought of sneaking out of the pack but we stayed because we found the experience to be quite fun in a freakish way. The ranger seemed to be very interested in making it clear that the official version was that no one had had his/her names changed during the registration procedure there. However, there were some people in the audience that disagreed and cited some examples. But the discussion didn't turn into an argument. To end the tour we had to decide which way to go down a staircase divided by two handrails: left, center or right. We took right and were told that of the two ways for accepted people that was the one for those who were not staying in New York but going somewhere else. Just like us.

Dinner in Harlem

A couple of weeks ago, we went down to NYC. Our original intention was to walk around the lake in Central Park, eat something and then go to a jazz club in Harlem (Uptown Jazz Lounge at Minton's Playhouse). Unfortunately we got late to the Union Station and we had to wait for an hour for the next train to New York. So when we finally arrived, we only had time for the walk in Central Park and the dinner. Even so, the night was quite fun. The walk by the lake was beautiful. It was the first time I was in that part of the park and also the first time I saw the skyscrapers at night. There were lots of people running and even some people having dinner on picnic tables. Then we headed north to Harlem and we wandered looking for a place to dine. The difference between Manhattan and Harlem is not only quite obvious but also quite abrupt. The anecdote of the promenade was two guys riding quads side by side and doing a wheelie all along Madison Avenue. We had dinner at Ottomanelli Brothers' Meat Market which is just a block north from the upper eastern corner of Central Park in Latin Harlem. The food was good and abundant. I finished my hamburger but we took some spaghetti with meatballs back home. There will be time to go back for some jazz.

Empire State Building or there's always a free cab for you in NYC

Fa uns dies vaig visitar l'emblemàtic Empire State Building. Aquí van un seguit de reflexions:
3. Les vistes són espectaculars miris cap on miris. I Central Park és realment gran.

<>

Some days ago I visited the Empire State Building. I leave you with some thoughts:1. If you can, don't choose the Spanish audioguide. On second thought, actually, do take it, it can be fun.
2. Do you know that thing that happens in "every" american movie or series where the main character goes out on the street and he/she always finds a free cab to take? Well, at least in New York City, it's not that a free cab happens to be there by chance, the thing is that there are cabs passing by all the time. And from the top (or close to it) of the Empire State Building you can see that quite well.
3. The views are just amazing no matter where you look. And Central Park really is one big park.
4. The American money making machine works pretty fine: you get to the Empire State Building block and a group of uniformed ticket sellers receives you trying to sell you tickets (in case you don't have them already). You get into the building and it's like getting on a roller coaster or even better like being in a assembly line. Take this escalator, show the bag here, tickets there, take a picture here (to buy it afterwards if you want to), get the audioguide, get on the elevator and on the next elevator, and there you are. Everything at a breathtaking speed, if you are lucky and there is no queue, and in the process you go through a number of stairscases, walk some corridors and take a couple of elevators of a certain elegance and opulence.
5. Gift shop is "espectacular" in a freaky sense.

4th of July: Independence Day

I had forgotten to tell you about the chinese years. Sure many of you already know but every year comes with on of the animals that you can see in the photo above these lines (you can check yours). For those born in 1984 it's the rat. Actually there is some resemblance, right?

This is Times Square and it looks like I was ON with the national holiday if judging by the look on my face, the sign and the flag. Appearances can be deceptive.

In Times Square there is room for everything, no matter how impossible it seems. Apart from the bunch of ads everywhere, there is also space for more modest ads like the ones in this pictures: Jesus saves from Hell. The ladies in rollers and waving the flags are funny too.

This year the national holiday fell on a Monday and we decided to go to New York. We walked in Central Park, on Broadway to Times Square and on the 5th avenue. The 4th of July atmosphere was basically created through some more flags than it is usual, but nothing really spectacular. Apart from that, Central Park was as beautiful as always, the streets in summer were much more crowded than when I first was there last fall, Times Square was stuffed with tourists bombarded by bigger and bigger ads in posters or in video screens and the 5th avenue, as expected, was packed with clothes shops, a couple of them even had a queue outside and looked like there was a party inside; it was hard to tell if they were shops, clubs or both ("shubs", because they definitely weren't "clops", right?).

Later, back in New Haven after a little less than 2 hours by train, we enjoyed a second "Sant Joan" with the fireworks that are also typical of the festivities of the Independence Day.

Vol Part II: El Retorn - Flight Part II: The Return.

<>

Until that moment, everything had gone smoothly. At the Barcelona airport everything OK. In spite of the 8 hours, the flight as well thanks to the good company (Laura), reading (The Godfather), a movie (Appaloosa) and some video games on the screen of the seat in front (Trivial and Reversi aka Othello). But once in JFK airport everything starts to go wrong. The applause from some passengers to the pilots after the landing are a cheerful prelude contrasting with the hour and a half that we will have to wait before being able to leave the airport. Even before being able to get off the plane, twice the pilot had to ask some people that had stood up too quickly to regain their sits until he had finished the parking maneuver. After this "funny" incident, our way out of the airport by steps starts. The first stage is occurs in a tunnel were we are crowded together with people from other flights waiting to be sent to the immigration control. We spend 15 minutes there (and we were lucky because we were among the first passengers to leave the plane). But those 15 minutes were nothing compared to the 45 minutes we had to stand, eager to go to the restroom, at the immigration queue. When the moment came, questions, fingerprints, pictures and we are set. Now go get the baggage that has been waiting by the carousel to be picked up (fortunately by us). Once that done, it is time for yet another baggage control and as I've taken the risk to answer "Yes" to the question whether I carry any kind of fruits, legumes, etc., I have to leave a couple of guacamaios (good health, they were quite ripe so they probably were tasty).

Once outside, free to go where we please, it's time to look for the guy that is subletting us his studio. If he is still there after more than an hour. But he had to give us the keys, so the poor guy had no choice. Chris, that's his name, is a very nice guy and he even helps us find our way to the phone to call the shuttle that has to take us to New Haven. We say goodbye and 20 minutes later we are sitting in the van. The driver, discovering that we are from Barcelona, says "Catalans, huh?" and makes some comment about the many successes that Barça has had lately. We pick up some more people and we travel pretty cramped on the rear seat until we leave the first passenger an hour later. On the radio they speak about Libia, Siria and Greece. Let's just say that their vision is not very close to mine. Finally, after 2 hores and a half of travelling, we get to what will be our home for the next 2 months.

New York City

No passa res, no tinc pressa. No està malament.

"E'to e' el Bronx". Molts i idéntics. I entremig, pistes de bàsquet. Estaria bé això a Barcelona. If we touch you, we pay you". Espectacle realment espectacular.

Altra cop ascensor cap avall.

"Suits on offer". Altre cop referència a "How I met your mother". Finalment arribo a la meva destinació. M'encanten els parcs. M'encanta poder seure a menjar-me el dinar envoltat d'arbres, gespa, aigua i uns quants esquirols.

New York City. City of cities. This is the thought that runs through my mind short after waking up on Tuesday 26th of October. It is the day of my first visit to New York City and I have a feeling that I don't remember having had before. I am thrilled and excited about setting foot on this big city. Even when the reason/excuse is the visit to the consulate to register as a temporary resident abroad so that I am able to vote on the 28th of November by mail. The few elections and other oportunities to democratically participate that we are given should be used. Even if it is only for a few hours that will not allow me to go anywhere outside Manhattan. I go out with just enough time to catch the train I had planned to take. I get to the station with 1 minute left and I buy the ticket at the speed worthy of a New Haven citizen. I run along an underground passage to its very end, my train leaves from the last track number 14, good number, but too far away to get there on time. I miss my train by 30 seconds, a girl going down the stairs from the platform to the tunnel, gives me the bad news: "Just left". It's alright, I am not in a rush. Now I have time to check that I bought the right ticket: bingo. One out of two. Not bad. I head back to the station hall and spend my time reading and doing some work. Fifteen minutes before the departure time I walk to track 14 again. At the platform there is no one to be seen. Only 7 minutes left for the train to leave and not a soul. Luckily enough a thought pops in my head, I run along the tunnel (that I already know by heart) to the hall to check the track: 8. And I run once again along the tunnel. I get to the right platform and there is waiting the train which leaves short after. This time with me inside.

After a couple hours travel, we enter New York at The Bronx. "E'to e' el Bronx". Typical ancient houses and streets featuring in lots of movies. With their fire escapes on the laterals. Not so typical very high apartment buildings, huge, side by side. A lot and identical. And in between streetbasketball courts. It is almost as if there was one in each street. It would be awesome having that in Barcelona. We arrive at Grand Central Terminal, ancient and mytical train station. It takes me a while to find the subway and when I find it I have to wait 10 minutes for it to arrive. But it is totally worth it, although I have to get off at the next station: immediately after getting in, a group of 4 guys introduce themselves to the passengers in the coach: "If we touch you, we pay you". The coach is way smaller than those of Barcelona. Similar to the subways of London, Berlin or Paris, narrow. Their show is a mixture of gimnastics and breakdance. Really spectacular spectacle. But I don't have time nor room to take out the camera and I already have to get off.

I get out of the subway at the 59th and turn left on Lexington to get to the 58th. In the middle of Manhattan. All buildings are skyscrapers. Mine as well. I take the elevator to the 30th floor. I have probably been at a greater height but I have definitely never been at a floor with a number so high. The consulate is much better than I expected, the treatment is very correct. I have to go get me a passport photo. Down in the elevator again. $16.33 for 4 passport photos (though american size, some 2-3 times bigger). Up I go again. The elevator is probably the fastest I have ever used. It almost produces the same feeling in you stomach than the Aladino. I hand in the photo, fill in 3 forms and out.

1:00PM, time to have lunch and I head to Central Park. And by analogy with the first thought of the day: Park of parks. I buy a shawarma platter with salad and rice and a water bottle. At the first corner, a Victoria's Secret shop. No more than 2 days ago I watched an episode from "How I met you mother" in which Barney and Ted attended a party of this brand. Only a little farther on a woman hands out leaflets. "Suits on offer". Again a reference to "How I met your mother". Finally I arrive at my destination. I love parks. I love being able to sit down to eat my lunch surrounded by trees, grass, water and some squirrels. I finish and I start walking around with no definite course until I get to a slight slope where some people lie down. I love a quick nap under a tree, on the grass, by a pond and with some squirrels. I wake up after 5-10 minutes and it is time to go catch the return train and take the opportunity to contemplate the station that, according to a website by The Times, deserves a look. This time no surprises with trains and tracks. Till next time NYC.

1a setmana - 1st week

Habitació correcte: tele, wifi i bon llit. Decoració com a mínim curiosa: posters de Crepuscle (veure versió anglesa), "Believe Your Dreams" i "Happy Bunny Grid". Correu. Pijama. I a dormir.

Britney Spears.

The first week is gone and I realize it half-way through the second one. On Sunday 17th I arrived around 2:30 PM (Eastern Standard Time, around 8:30 PM in BCN). My tutor here came to pick me up at the JFK airport, first nice one on his count. 2 hours by car to begin knowing each other, to listen two and a half times a CD and to contemplate the famous New York City skyline and the Yankees stadium. However his hospitality didn't stop there. Yours truly would have been happy just getting to my new home, unpacking a few things, having dinner and going to sleep. Jun (it's Japanese, it is pronounced just like [Joon]) had another plan. He invited me to have dinner with her wife and their two children to a tapas restaurant named Barcelona (there are little children that know how to behave properly when they go out to eat). Well then, it felt just like at home. The waiter introduces himself: his name is Adrien. Is this the other side of the pond or the other side of the mirror? As we let him know of my origin, at the end of the dinner he asked about my opinion: generally speaking all the tapas were pretty good and with great variety. The first prize for the Anchoves. The patatas bravas need to improve, not any spicy sauce works and the potatoes should be peeled. Adrien promised to pass the comment to the cooker. It was about 6:30 PM and feeling increasingly sleepy had been joint by a slight headache. Time to shut down. Jun, faithful to his hospitable line, drives me back home. The room is fine: TV, Wi-Fi and a good bed. Decor is at least curious: posters of Twilight, "Believe Your Dreams" and "Happy Bunny Grid" (see Catalan version). Mail. Pijama. And going to sleep.

Tomorrow first entire day in New Haven and lots of new stuff to discover all through the week. From the most simple things such as the "tassa de vàter": longer, lower, more water. People hums songs here too, but what do they hum? Britney Spears. What song? See video in Catalan version.

The air is fresh and pleasant to breath. The streets are wide, the sidewalks too. The lawn, the grass, the bushes and the trees occupy every impassable space. The colours of tree leaves are beautiful, very beautiful, with green, yellow, brown, ocher and reddish shades. And each green space has its inhabitants in the form of squirrels.

At work (Kline Geology Laboratory, Department of Geology and Geophysics) they put me in one of the few free cubicles left in the students room. The atmosphere is very very quiet. Of course with the non-stop party we have going on in BCN with my office mate, everything seems quiet. People is quite reserved, so far I have met Ping Hu, from the nearby cubicle. As her name suggests, she is of Asian origin. And I have not cross-checked this but, according to my observation, the largest comunity in Yale is this one, the Asian.

At 12:00 PM Jun takes me to have lunch at the Dinning Hall which turned into a library for the shooting of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (remember the scene with the motorcycle at the beginning of the movie?). On the way, he gives me the directions (closer) to a group of fastfood streetside vendors (cheaper) including Thai, Mexican and Eastern Mediterrenian to which I have been going for the rest of the week.

Apart from all this, I have devoted the week to explore the three closest supermarkets to pick the best one, and to purchase essential stuff such as an adapter to be able to connect my laptop and other electronic devices. Except the cell phone, the cell phone needed to wait until the second week. But that's already a story for the next post. Till then "Lux et Veritas".

Vol - Flight

Doncs no. Operadora antipàtica. Somriures 0 - Preguntes Moltes: "Dónde vas?" "New Haven" "Dirección exacta?" "136 Cold Spring Street, New Haven, CT 06511". Me la fa escriure. "Cuánto tiempo?" "2 mesos".

Primer prestatge, tasses. 1 Barça, 2 Drac del Park Güell,  3 BarcelONa. Corro cap a la porta d'embarcament. Arribar i cap a dins.

Entro a l'avió i començo a notar USA. Busco i rebusco. Mentrestant l'avió s'enlaira. Pel·lis, sèries, jocs.

Deixarem el llibre per altres vols. Games: In Flight Texas Hold'em.

Round 2: ens tornem a trobar... Tino? El seient no enganya: 39B. Victòria. Dormir.

At 7 o'clock in the morning, I wake up 3 or 4 hours after I went to bed. 2 months are 2 months and I want to squeeze every last moment before I leave. Sleeping can wait for the 9 hours of plane.

At the airport, first remarkable thing: baggage check-in. Easy, isn't it? No big deal. Not that fast. Unpleasant operator. Smiles 0 - Questions A lot: "Where are you going?" "New Haven" “Exact address?” “136 Cold Spring Street, New Haven, CT 06511”. She asks me to write it down. “For how long?” “2 months”. And to finish with it, she gives me a boarding card while saying: “You don't have a sit”. As if it were nothing. “How is that?” “You don't have a sit, you'll be assign one at the boarding gate”.

Mission 1 (getting presents for the family providing a room for me) just fell to second place. Mission 1: getting a sit. At the boarding gate little information, quite lacking organization. I get my sit. I run to the first souvenirs shop. The very first, no time for more. First shelves, mugs. 1 Barça, 2 Drac del Park Güell, 3 BarcelONa. I run to the boarding gate. Get there and in I go.

I enter the plane and start feeling USA. Small piece of paper with questions I have already answered (some of them) not long ago. Will there be the famous questions? Do you want to kill the president? Are you a member of the Communist Party? Disappointment, no. I get to my sit, I take out my book from my bag. I sit down, I have room for my legs, never seen before. The sit in front has a screen for me. I search and search again. In the meantime the plane takes off. Films, series, games.

I'll leave the book for other flights. Games: In Flight Texas Hold'em. The typical lame game against the computer? No, I play against the passenger in sit 39B, Tony. Round 1: after being 1500 – 2500 down, I recover, 2500 – 1500. Brunch time, he gives up, victory.

Free films? Not all of the, Predators (American Spanish) yes, Karate Kid (English) too. Eat, film, sleep, film, restroom, eat (I am full! I will keep my sandwich for later), poker. Round 2: we meet again... Tino? The sit number doesn't lie: 39B. Victory. Sleep. Restroom and there we are.

We land an hour before. I come out of the terminal an hour before. In the meantime, passport control, pick up baggage, baggage control and more questions. Well, the same once more. The bag is broken in a suspisous way (the upper short side, along the top edge seam). What can you do? Will I fix it with duct tape (we call that American tape)?
