Dinner in Harlem

A couple of weeks ago, we went down to NYC. Our original intention was to walk around the lake in Central Park, eat something and then go to a jazz club in Harlem (Uptown Jazz Lounge at Minton's Playhouse). Unfortunately we got late to the Union Station and we had to wait for an hour for the next train to New York. So when we finally arrived, we only had time for the walk in Central Park and the dinner. Even so, the night was quite fun. The walk by the lake was beautiful. It was the first time I was in that part of the park and also the first time I saw the skyscrapers at night. There were lots of people running and even some people having dinner on picnic tables. Then we headed north to Harlem and we wandered looking for a place to dine. The difference between Manhattan and Harlem is not only quite obvious but also quite abrupt. The anecdote of the promenade was two guys riding quads side by side and doing a wheelie all along Madison Avenue. We had dinner at Ottomanelli Brothers' Meat Market which is just a block north from the upper eastern corner of Central Park in Latin Harlem. The food was good and abundant. I finished my hamburger but we took some spaghetti with meatballs back home. There will be time to go back for some jazz.

Empire State Building or there's always a free cab for you in NYC

Fa uns dies vaig visitar l'emblemàtic Empire State Building. Aquí van un seguit de reflexions:
3. Les vistes són espectaculars miris cap on miris. I Central Park és realment gran.

<>

Some days ago I visited the Empire State Building. I leave you with some thoughts:1. If you can, don't choose the Spanish audioguide. On second thought, actually, do take it, it can be fun.
2. Do you know that thing that happens in "every" american movie or series where the main character goes out on the street and he/she always finds a free cab to take? Well, at least in New York City, it's not that a free cab happens to be there by chance, the thing is that there are cabs passing by all the time. And from the top (or close to it) of the Empire State Building you can see that quite well.
3. The views are just amazing no matter where you look. And Central Park really is one big park.
4. The American money making machine works pretty fine: you get to the Empire State Building block and a group of uniformed ticket sellers receives you trying to sell you tickets (in case you don't have them already). You get into the building and it's like getting on a roller coaster or even better like being in a assembly line. Take this escalator, show the bag here, tickets there, take a picture here (to buy it afterwards if you want to), get the audioguide, get on the elevator and on the next elevator, and there you are. Everything at a breathtaking speed, if you are lucky and there is no queue, and in the process you go through a number of stairscases, walk some corridors and take a couple of elevators of a certain elegance and opulence.
5. Gift shop is "espectacular" in a freaky sense.

4th of July: Independence Day

I had forgotten to tell you about the chinese years. Sure many of you already know but every year comes with on of the animals that you can see in the photo above these lines (you can check yours). For those born in 1984 it's the rat. Actually there is some resemblance, right?

This is Times Square and it looks like I was ON with the national holiday if judging by the look on my face, the sign and the flag. Appearances can be deceptive.

In Times Square there is room for everything, no matter how impossible it seems. Apart from the bunch of ads everywhere, there is also space for more modest ads like the ones in this pictures: Jesus saves from Hell. The ladies in rollers and waving the flags are funny too.

This year the national holiday fell on a Monday and we decided to go to New York. We walked in Central Park, on Broadway to Times Square and on the 5th avenue. The 4th of July atmosphere was basically created through some more flags than it is usual, but nothing really spectacular. Apart from that, Central Park was as beautiful as always, the streets in summer were much more crowded than when I first was there last fall, Times Square was stuffed with tourists bombarded by bigger and bigger ads in posters or in video screens and the 5th avenue, as expected, was packed with clothes shops, a couple of them even had a queue outside and looked like there was a party inside; it was hard to tell if they were shops, clubs or both ("shubs", because they definitely weren't "clops", right?).

Later, back in New Haven after a little less than 2 hours by train, we enjoyed a second "Sant Joan" with the fireworks that are also typical of the festivities of the Independence Day.

Vol Part II: El Retorn - Flight Part II: The Return.

<>

Until that moment, everything had gone smoothly. At the Barcelona airport everything OK. In spite of the 8 hours, the flight as well thanks to the good company (Laura), reading (The Godfather), a movie (Appaloosa) and some video games on the screen of the seat in front (Trivial and Reversi aka Othello). But once in JFK airport everything starts to go wrong. The applause from some passengers to the pilots after the landing are a cheerful prelude contrasting with the hour and a half that we will have to wait before being able to leave the airport. Even before being able to get off the plane, twice the pilot had to ask some people that had stood up too quickly to regain their sits until he had finished the parking maneuver. After this "funny" incident, our way out of the airport by steps starts. The first stage is occurs in a tunnel were we are crowded together with people from other flights waiting to be sent to the immigration control. We spend 15 minutes there (and we were lucky because we were among the first passengers to leave the plane). But those 15 minutes were nothing compared to the 45 minutes we had to stand, eager to go to the restroom, at the immigration queue. When the moment came, questions, fingerprints, pictures and we are set. Now go get the baggage that has been waiting by the carousel to be picked up (fortunately by us). Once that done, it is time for yet another baggage control and as I've taken the risk to answer "Yes" to the question whether I carry any kind of fruits, legumes, etc., I have to leave a couple of guacamaios (good health, they were quite ripe so they probably were tasty).

Once outside, free to go where we please, it's time to look for the guy that is subletting us his studio. If he is still there after more than an hour. But he had to give us the keys, so the poor guy had no choice. Chris, that's his name, is a very nice guy and he even helps us find our way to the phone to call the shuttle that has to take us to New Haven. We say goodbye and 20 minutes later we are sitting in the van. The driver, discovering that we are from Barcelona, says "Catalans, huh?" and makes some comment about the many successes that Barça has had lately. We pick up some more people and we travel pretty cramped on the rear seat until we leave the first passenger an hour later. On the radio they speak about Libia, Siria and Greece. Let's just say that their vision is not very close to mine. Finally, after 2 hores and a half of travelling, we get to what will be our home for the next 2 months.

Setmana a San Francisco - Week in San Francisco

Havia arribat l'hora d'acomiadar-se de New Haven.

L'hotel està bé i l'habitació també, us deixo algunes fotos.

Home sweet home.

<>

The time had come to leave New Haven. At 9 o'clock in the morning, after saying goodbye to the Genns, I left  to go take the shuttle van that had to take me to John Fitzerald Kennedy airport in New York. And for the first time since my arrival, it was raining for real, just when I had no more hands to hold the umbrella. Anyways, the bus did not take long to get there and I could wait for it under cover.

At the airport, after the security control (c'mon only one to go!) I connect to the Internet through Skype (which rocks) and I watch the NFL while I wait for boarding. The plane takes my from coast to coast. When the clouds and the light allow, the view is amazing: the central regions of the country are covered in snow after the heavy snowfalls of the last few day.

The taxi driver that takes me to the hotel from the airport tells me some things to visit in the city. Unfortunately I will only have half a day to do some siteseeing and it will have to be in the city so I can already forget about the giant trees, a real shame. The hotel is fine and the room too, I leave you some pics here (or above). The next day someone tells me that my hotel is at the limit of a not very secure area. The truth is that on the way to the meeting venue, some 10 minutes walking, one can see a sharp change from a quite depressed area, buildings in bad conditions and homeless people, to the downtown area, tall buildings, malls, executives and so on. Anyways, at no time did I feel like being in a dangerous zone.

The meeting was like any other but at a larger scale. From Monday to Thursday I attend every day, with more or less luck/interest in the sessions. On Monday I am already done with my poster presentation. Friday comes and I just go to the meeting to grab something to eat for breakfast. This week in San Fran has seen the worst diet of my entire stay in the States.  However it gave me the chance to taste an American hamburger, an American pie and a muffin which add up to the hot dog, the pizza and others that you can read about on previous posts.

My plan was to take the cable car and go see Lombard Street, but they only accept payment in cash for the tickets and I haven't enough left. So I will have to look at them from the sidewalk while I climb the city hills. Before though, a homeless offers my a newspaper, Street Sheet,  for one dollar. I have some change, less than a dollar, but he gives it to me anyway. As I had already noticed, the city has a huge number of people living in the street, according to Street Sheet around 12,000. After walking for half an hour up the slopes I get to my destination, a very curious steep street one-block long and consisting of hairpin turns. I show you some photos here, but you may have already seen it on some movie.

In the afternoon I just have to get ready for the way back trip to Barcelona, I decided not to go to sleep. The taxi driver that takes me to the airport tells me about a Mystery Spot: a place where you mesure your height, you cross a threshold and when you check your height again the results is different. A posteriori, with some research through the net, I've learnt that Mystery Spots are common in the US... and that there is an explanation for them. He also told me about some place in Italy where cars seem to go up the road when left in neutral... this taxi driver is a real goldmine and a master of international esoterism. At the airport and after the security control (the last one!) I get really hungry and I devour a Kit Kat King Size (basically two regular Kit Kats put together). At the same shop I see a Bicycle card deck (the Heraclio Fournier of the US) and obviously I buy it. From here to Barcelona, not much apart from long hours of plane sleeping, watching bad movies, eating and occasionally translating (together with the guy siting at my right) for an American tourist and a Chilean woman living in Barcelona that have trouble understanding each other but insist on trying to communicate (specially the latter).  The former boasts about her daughter who studies at ESADE. Finally the long awaited moment arrives, we get out of the plane, I'm in Barcelona 9 weeks later, a Sunday at 8:40 am. Home sweet home.

Capde a Boston - Weekend in Boston

Només quedava decidir si anar a veure els New York Knicks o els Boston Celtics.

Molt autèntic i molt bo. (hot dog, pepperoni pizza i brunch, ja "només" falta hamburguesa, muffin, pie,..). Torna a córrer. Tanquen el museu i em toca anar marxant, cap a New Haven falta gent. Gran cap de setmana a Boston!

One thing was for sure, if I was going to the United States, I was going to an NBA game. The only thing to decide was whether I was going to see the New York Knicks or the Boston Celtics.  The distance  from New Haven to both cities is approximately the same. Boston is slightly farther away but they have the second best team in the league (at least of the last season) and the inimitable Shaquille O'Neal. The chosen game was Celtics - Bulls. The major problem I was facing was what to do after the game, which would end around 11 pm. Actually far from being a problem it was more of a very good chance because I was able to crash on a friend's apartment, two nights. And this is how my weekend in Boston was possible.

On Friday the 3rd of December, I left work sooner with a bag for my clothes, my lunch box with some food I didn't want to leave in the fridge and my laptop. After two hours and a half of train and 45 minutes of subway full to the top with people, I arrived at Lia's place. It was the first time we met each other in person, the Internet era, you know. I had to leave as soon as I arrived not to be late for the game. She showed me where I could sleep (there were 3 sofas), gave me the keys and having left my stuff there, I went for the door, not without thanking her, dude has an education. I made two steps on the landing, I turned around and I went in again. Almost forgot the ticket purchase confirmation.

The game was awesome, you can see some images at the Videos section and a brief comment at Short Stories. Just like the football game gave me the chance to eat my first hot dog, the NBA game provided the opportunity to taste my first American pizza, pepperoni and very good flavour. The game finished, I head to the apartment. There I found the leftovers of the start of a party: glasses, beer and other beverages. Before going to sleep and after making sure that online poker is not illegal Massachusetts, I poured myself a glass of rum and I played a few hands.

The next day morning, Lia recommended some things to do to make the best of the Saturday. To begin with, the Boston Common park, with its frozen pond where people go ice-skating, Frog Pond. The squirrels in Boston are far more trusting than those in New Haven. Afterwards I continued walking around downtown: I visited a very small cementry in the middle of the city (there are several similar cementries), I saw the City Hall (total agreement: very ugly building) and lots of other buildings way more beautiful, I got to the port, I saw some seals at the aquarium and I visited Fanueil Market. There I was able to taste the Clam Chowder in a Bread Bowl, veeery tasty typical dish. In the afternoon, I went to take a walk around the Harvard campus and later to the MIT one. When I got to the latter however, it was already late and dark, so I decided that it was about time to go back. At the apartment, after the whole day going up and down the city I played some hands again before going to sofa. But first we watch the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: sincerely I dont see how they managed to translate some gags. Anyway, Carlton is the best.

On Sunday morning I tried to wake up at a decent hour but it is general knowledge, too many factors against me: going to sleep late, Sunday, mini-holidays. The MIT museum will have to wait. However the following Monday, Jun, who had been at the MIT, highlighted its souvenir's shop, so even if I didn't know it at that time, it wasn't a great miss. Alternatively, the first thing he asked me when I told him about my trip to Boston was if I had been to the Museum of Fine Arts. Well yes, yes I had. But before we had brunch. Very authentic and  yummy. (hot dog, pepperoni pizza and brunch, "only" missing a hamburger, muffin, pie,..) With all my stuff to go directly to the station to take the train back, we went to the museum. Odyssey: we run behind a bus which scapes us, or more accurately the driver doesn't wait for us, but well this is a classic in all big cities. After a time waiting we choose to keep walking and take a taxi if we happen to find one. Just when we are talking to a taxi driver that tells us he is waiting for someone, the next bus runs passed us again. Run again. This time de gods of traffic lights and bus drivers are on our side. The drivers lets us in while stopped at a traffic light which is forbidden in Boston as well as in Barcelona. The museum is great, huge, impossible to be fully seen in the less than two hours left before it closes. Here I leave you a greek myth which I (re)discovered thanks to the museum (if you have read Harry Potter, there is something that will sound familiar). The museum closes and it is time for me to get going to New Haven. Great weekend in Boston!

East Rock Park

"East Rock Park" és el parc on he anat a córrer uns quants cops mentre no ha fet molt fred (només tinc pantalons curts d'esport, a Barcelona no cal més).

<>

East Rock Park is where I have gone jogging a few times while it hasn't been too cold (I only have sport shorts, in Barcelona that's all you need really). It is just at the opposite corner of my place. Some days ago I decided to go to the park for a walk and to take some photos and to make some videos to put them here on the blog. You can find the pictures below and the videos in the Videos section. I hope you enjoy them and if you feel like leave a comment saying which one is your favourite or whatever crosses your mind.

Football at Yale Bowl

A l'entrada a l'estadi, una noia em pregunta: "Are you a student?".

My second weekend in New Haven was approaching and I decided to go to a football game of Yale Bulldogs, the university team. And I proved I was a novice. The day before I bought the ticket on the Internet. The next day a went downtown to take the bus. The bus tickets (round trip) are not actual tickets but small coins or chips like those used in old amusement parks. To the present moment, the women who sold them to me is the person I have had more trouble understanding by far. However, I managed to get the essential: corner, 5-10 minutes, bus F6. The driver kindly told me when to get off. I follow scattered groups and people that head in the same direction. At the entrance of the stadium, a girl ask me: "Are you a student?". My answer is doubtful, not (only) because of the language but because I am really not registered as I student at Yale but as the visitor of a professor. However, the girl at the entrance seems satisfied with my word and lets me in. You can imagine that my ticket was useless. The game was great, very authentic, all American and exciting till the end ("down to the wire"). There was even a speaker that announced the plays (not very amusing though) and that at a certain moment explained where the free buses for Yale students would depart from to get back to New Haven. So, as you can imagine again, I still have a CTTransit Bus coin left. By the way,Yale (31) beat Columbia (28) and the event also provided the occasion to eat my first Hot Dog, good enough.

You can see some pictures and videos of the game in the Videos section. Like a friend of mine said the day I uploaded them, there are more videos featuring the cheerleaders than the game itself. It needs to be said that for me is more of a novelty the presence of cheerleaders at a university game than going to a university game. Moreover, as I told my friend, the longest video is devoted to the music band, that has a repertoire including the soundtrack of Tetris, one of Lady Gaga's hits, Bad Romance, the soundtrack of The Lord of the Rings: "The bridge of Khazad Dum" and "American Idiot" by Greenday. You can listen to some of these songs in the video of the half-time show or the videos of the cheerleaders.

New York City

No passa res, no tinc pressa. No està malament.

"E'to e' el Bronx". Molts i idéntics. I entremig, pistes de bàsquet. Estaria bé això a Barcelona. If we touch you, we pay you". Espectacle realment espectacular.

Altra cop ascensor cap avall.

"Suits on offer". Altre cop referència a "How I met your mother". Finalment arribo a la meva destinació. M'encanten els parcs. M'encanta poder seure a menjar-me el dinar envoltat d'arbres, gespa, aigua i uns quants esquirols.

New York City. City of cities. This is the thought that runs through my mind short after waking up on Tuesday 26th of October. It is the day of my first visit to New York City and I have a feeling that I don't remember having had before. I am thrilled and excited about setting foot on this big city. Even when the reason/excuse is the visit to the consulate to register as a temporary resident abroad so that I am able to vote on the 28th of November by mail. The few elections and other oportunities to democratically participate that we are given should be used. Even if it is only for a few hours that will not allow me to go anywhere outside Manhattan. I go out with just enough time to catch the train I had planned to take. I get to the station with 1 minute left and I buy the ticket at the speed worthy of a New Haven citizen. I run along an underground passage to its very end, my train leaves from the last track number 14, good number, but too far away to get there on time. I miss my train by 30 seconds, a girl going down the stairs from the platform to the tunnel, gives me the bad news: "Just left". It's alright, I am not in a rush. Now I have time to check that I bought the right ticket: bingo. One out of two. Not bad. I head back to the station hall and spend my time reading and doing some work. Fifteen minutes before the departure time I walk to track 14 again. At the platform there is no one to be seen. Only 7 minutes left for the train to leave and not a soul. Luckily enough a thought pops in my head, I run along the tunnel (that I already know by heart) to the hall to check the track: 8. And I run once again along the tunnel. I get to the right platform and there is waiting the train which leaves short after. This time with me inside.

After a couple hours travel, we enter New York at The Bronx. "E'to e' el Bronx". Typical ancient houses and streets featuring in lots of movies. With their fire escapes on the laterals. Not so typical very high apartment buildings, huge, side by side. A lot and identical. And in between streetbasketball courts. It is almost as if there was one in each street. It would be awesome having that in Barcelona. We arrive at Grand Central Terminal, ancient and mytical train station. It takes me a while to find the subway and when I find it I have to wait 10 minutes for it to arrive. But it is totally worth it, although I have to get off at the next station: immediately after getting in, a group of 4 guys introduce themselves to the passengers in the coach: "If we touch you, we pay you". The coach is way smaller than those of Barcelona. Similar to the subways of London, Berlin or Paris, narrow. Their show is a mixture of gimnastics and breakdance. Really spectacular spectacle. But I don't have time nor room to take out the camera and I already have to get off.

I get out of the subway at the 59th and turn left on Lexington to get to the 58th. In the middle of Manhattan. All buildings are skyscrapers. Mine as well. I take the elevator to the 30th floor. I have probably been at a greater height but I have definitely never been at a floor with a number so high. The consulate is much better than I expected, the treatment is very correct. I have to go get me a passport photo. Down in the elevator again. $16.33 for 4 passport photos (though american size, some 2-3 times bigger). Up I go again. The elevator is probably the fastest I have ever used. It almost produces the same feeling in you stomach than the Aladino. I hand in the photo, fill in 3 forms and out.

1:00PM, time to have lunch and I head to Central Park. And by analogy with the first thought of the day: Park of parks. I buy a shawarma platter with salad and rice and a water bottle. At the first corner, a Victoria's Secret shop. No more than 2 days ago I watched an episode from "How I met you mother" in which Barney and Ted attended a party of this brand. Only a little farther on a woman hands out leaflets. "Suits on offer". Again a reference to "How I met your mother". Finally I arrive at my destination. I love parks. I love being able to sit down to eat my lunch surrounded by trees, grass, water and some squirrels. I finish and I start walking around with no definite course until I get to a slight slope where some people lie down. I love a quick nap under a tree, on the grass, by a pond and with some squirrels. I wake up after 5-10 minutes and it is time to go catch the return train and take the opportunity to contemplate the station that, according to a website by The Times, deserves a look. This time no surprises with trains and tracks. Till next time NYC.
